Blessing of the Beers Fundraiser - March 2, 2009
Hello Folks,
Our next Better Beverage Society meeting will be on Monday, March 02, 2009 at Gene McCarthy’s Pub (
www.genemccarthyspub.com). We expect to have several special guests (including a few local officials) visiting us, as we look forward to raising a few dollars for The Old First Ward Community Center. The program includes the standard three hours of beverages for only $25 (starting at 6:00 till 9:00, the celebration goes on afterwards too!), which will include Chef Mike Simonick’s Corned Beef and Cabbage Plate, and music by Step-in-Time Band, performing live (
www.stepintimemusic.com) at the pub for your enjoyment, plus, our good friends at Eden Horse and Carriage Co. (
www.edencarriage.com ). Our local parish priest, Father Don Lutz, from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, will help us that evening, as he blesses our unique selections of craft draft beers and wines, before, we all gather outside the pub for a special prayer to St. Patrick, which serves to welcome all to the kick-off of the Old First Ward and Valley Neighborhoods March celebrations. As you are all aware already, we normally charge $20 for our beer club events, but, due to the fact that we are teaming up with the Old First Ward Community Center (sponsor of the Shamrock Run,
www.buffaloshamrockrun.com), for this charitable event, we will have an added up charge of an extra $5, which will go to the center, as a direct gift from all of us, and additionally, the center will have a few good folks on hand, who will be selling 50/50 split club tickets, and several brewers/distributers will be donating unique gifts for the cause to be raffled too! With this said, a special thanks goes to Tim Herzog, from Flying Bison Brewery (
www.flyingbisonbrewery.com) for his continue support of Buffalo causes, and his planned donation, to help make this event a great learning experience and success for all of us. Finally, please forward this information on to others of interest, and if anyone has any questions/concerns, fell free to contact me at 432-6385, or Suzette, at the pub at 855-8948. And as always, we respect and honor your continued patronage at Gene McCarthy’s Pub and Restaurant.

Big week for Fort Erie's ice boomers
ALISON LANGLEY / Review Staff Writer
Local News - Wednesday, April 11, 2007 Updated @ 7:12:06 AM
Ken Sherman is a boomer.
Every spring, the Hamilton resident travels to Fort Erie and crosses the Peace Bridge into Buffalo to celebrate the removal of the Niagara River ice boom. Sherman and his fellow boomers have been welcoming spring in their unique way since 2002.
The celebration has grown over the years and is now a three-day festival known as Boom Days. From April 13 to 15, Boom Days commemorates the history of the bustling waterways of Lake Erie and pays homage to its natural, historical and cultural wealth.
Essentially, Sherman explained, the celebration is three days of entertainment and food with events planned at various locations from Old Fort Niagara to the Buffalo River.
Sherman, the festival's organizer, hopes to launch next year's event on the Canadian shore.
"We look at it as a passport to spring. By next year, passports will be a national topic for international discussion," Sherman said with a laugh.
All the fun and frivolity wouldn't be possible if not for the long-standing partnership between Ontario Power Generation and the New York State Power Authority.
The agencies work together each year to install, maintain and finally remove the 2,680-metre ice boom. The boom is installed at the outer breakwall at Buffalo Harbor near the Canadian shore.
The boom is placed there to reduce ice accumulation on the river which can interfere with hydroelectric power production and cause flooding and damage to shore properties.
Crews from the New York Power Authority began dismantling the ice boom Tuesday morning.

Sheila Stratton-Peel Releases her First CD at McCarthy’s Pub
And has a second CD Release party at the Wilson House, Wilson, NY
On April 21, 2007, regional singer and songwriter, Sheila Stratton-Peel (formally of Iad Fein) announces her debut CD titled Celtic Lady of the Lake at Gene McCarthy’s Irish Pub in Buffalo’s Old First Ward Neighborhood. This event begins at 7:00 PM and is expected to last several hours, as Sheila and Lochside Celtic Duo play their favorites at McCarthy’s Irish Pub, which will include “Caledonia”,” How Will I Ever be Simple Again”, and the classic “Ride On”.
There will be a second CD release party at the Wilson House, 300 Lake Street, Wilson, NY on April 28, 2007. This event will start at 4:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Sheila will be accompanied by the group Lochside Celtic Duo, who were instrumental in recording and producing the CD at both of the CD release parties.
“I feel that my involvement in these CD releases is a culmination of my love and affection for the greater Irish Community, and my own Celtic roots here in Western New York,” said Sheila Stratton-Peel. “It becomes obvious when sitting with her, that her dedication to the history of the Irish/Celtic people is accomplished through song. Her voice often reflects her high strong emotional traditional interpretations of classic folklore”, states Gerhardt Yaskow who interviewed Sheila for this release. “I can’t think of a better venue, than the Old First Ward of Buffalo and its historic Irish roots, to debut my life’s work,” said Sheila Stratton-Peel. There is a deep commitment to the Celtic community in both Erie and Niagara Counties and in Fort Erie, Ontario, whereas Sheila is involved with many festivals and organizations that promote the heritage of the Celtic people.
During this release, Sheila has invited others regional performers and fans to hear her sing many of her solo hits and traditional renditions. The Wildes, Step-in-Time, Billy LaRauch, and Sloontynx, plan to accompany her at her ceremony. Regarding Sheila’s past artistic background, her local artist friend, Mary McAndrew from Clarence Center, with strengths in interpretive mythological art, has designed the CD’s cover jacket. Ms. McAndrew will be on hand for the celebration with some of her newest works. You can view her webpage at
www.marymcandrew.com.
Within the jacket one appreciates Sheila’s gratitude towards Tom Keefer, Norm Bock, fellow band members, and long time local performers and friends, including Gerhardt Yaskow, owner of historic McCarthy’s Irish Pub. “Having been born and raised near Keuka Lake, in Upstate New York, I have always considered myself to be a “lady of the lake”, with that being said, I am of Irish, Scottish, Welch, and Cornish heritage,” said Sheila Stratton-Peel. See her sites
www.sheilastrattonpeel.com and
www.celticmoonproductions.com for dates and time of future performances.
After 40 years of successful various life experiences in the music business, which began in Central New York’s Finger Lakes Region, later into Southern Ontario (Canada), and now, currently, in both Erie and Niagara Counties, Sheila has been awarded many accolades including: Best Female Voice in Folk for June 2005, an Adelphia Cable performance for the Niagara County Celtic Heritage Society Festival promotion in September 2006, extensive global reviews from
www.Folkmagazin.de to local reviewers such as Kate Olena, applauding her current and past professional achievements in our folk music arena.

Get Yourself to McCarthy's by Queeneyes from Buffalo Rising Online - October 15, 2006
Sound of Buffalo first introduced me to this Old First Ward iconic tavern. Located at a bend along the Buffalo River, McCarthy's Pub and Restaurant is about as 'Buffalo' as it gets around these parts. Yesterday, after taking some photos of the Buffalo River Taxi, I swung over to grab a bite to eat at the bar. When I pulled up to the pub (surrounded by grain mills and RR tracks) I was greeted by the establishment's owner, Gerhardt Yaskow. He invited me inside to talk about his restaurant, the history of the Old First Ward, and the city in general.
Right off the bat Gerhardt showed me the progress that he was making in turning the upper floor into pleasant living spaces. The floor was being reframed, but you could still tell where the 'scoopers' and the longshoremen used to live. Wow! The history in this area is amazing. These guys used to live in tiny rooms with shared kitchens and baths. I guess when they weren't working they were downstairs drinking.

Gene McCarthy's Tavern - Buffalo
NOTE: SPRING 2006 Tavern under new ownership as Gene McCarthy celebrates retirement. Welcome Gerhardt Yaskow behind the bar. See story below for more information.
Glass always half full at optimist's pub
BUFFALO NEWS 5/8/2006 By MARY KUNZ GOLDMAN
There are the followers and the leaders. The non-doers and the doers. The people who cry into their beer, and the people who rise and pour the beer. Gerhardt Yaskow is one of the latter. "My friends say I'm always looking on the bright side," he says. "But I see what is." Others look at Buffalo and see bleakness. Yaskow, who is 34 with wide-set, Slavic eyes, saw opportunity. He began buying, restoring and reselling old homes. You don't have to be Donald Trump to do that here. Now, he is part-owner of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, as well as the historic Coit House, which he plans to turn into a bed-and-breakfast. Last winter, Yaskow began poking around the Old First Ward. "I wasn't lost," he reflects. "There was the HSBC tower, the Cobblestone District." But as an Allentown yuppie of Polish, German and Ukrainian descent, he felt a bit disoriented. Then God sent him a sign. "For Sale," it said. It was in front of Gene McCarthy's Tavern. Even in the phone book, McCarthy's looks ancient: "McCarthy Gene Tavrn 73 Hamburg." The century-old tavern is tucked between houses and still-in-use railroad tracks, a stone's throw from the grain elevators. Treading in the footsteps of countless sailors and grain scoopers, Yaskow pushed open the heavy door. He learned that 80-year-old Gene McCarthy was retiring. Yaskow took in the vintage wooden bar, wainscotting and tin ceiling. He fell in love. He had tended bar before. Plus, his grandparents had once owned a Polish tavern near the Broadway Market, the area where he grew up. He decided those were credentials enough. He bought the bar - er, pub. "It's not a bar," Yaskow says. "It's a public house, where people don't go to get drunk, but to talk, to exchange ideas." Edward O. Smith, distinguished professor of history at Buffalo State College, nods approvingly. "This is a classic Irish pub, a place to come and have conversation," says Smith, enjoying a dark draft one sunny afternoon. "They don't allow swearing, either. The notion is that you could bring in your family, and it would be appropriate." Yaskow chimes in that McCarthy's wife, Mary, used to forbid bad language, and so will he. He may not be Irish, but he respects tradition. Patty Avent, who has cooked at the pub for 25 years, is staying on. Last week, a call found Yaskow at a bingo supplier on Clinton Street, buying balls for a game of chance. Someone had mistakenly tossed the originals, and regulars were frantic. Yaskow added historic photos and stained-glass images of grain elevators by local artist Lou Fisher. He had his old upright piano restored and moved that in, too. He drafted his sister Suzette to tend bar and replaced box wine with bottles. He puts in 50 hours a week, but doesn't mind. "I can't do this as a hobby, because I am in the prime of my life," he declares. Just two months have passed since McCarthy, in a crowded ceremony, handed the pub over to its new owner. It could be too soon to tell if Yaskow's passion is love or infatuation. But it sure looks like love. The tavern has calmed him, slowed him down in a good way. Before he found it, he was dealing in fast-track neighborhoods, dabbling in politics. Now, he admits those pursuits are on the back burner. Pub ownership has settled over him like a good marriage. He wears it with dignity and grace. Take care of our city, his story hints, and it will take care of us. "My generation, a lot of them complain and run," Yaskow says, pouring a guy a Bud. "I've never been interested in living outside Buffalo. Look around. The grass is not greener. You can create anything you want."
southbuffalorugby.com - June 22, 2006
It's with great excitement that I take this opportunity to announce two developments that will help the South Buffalo Rugby Club continue our growth and sustain momentum for the upcoming year.
The first is that we have completed an agreement with our new bar, McCarthy's. McCarthy's, located at Hamburg and Republic in the historic Old First Ward, has been operating since 1963 and has been an anchor within the community for years. This partnership is fruitful for both parties on a number of levels. We will be having our socials there for the fall and will try to frequent the establishment after practices and such. We will be putting our trophies and other assorted hardware up on the walls and they are welcoming us with open arms. We will also have some artwork from McCarthy's on our jerseys. This agreement was finalized through the extensive recommendations from the neighborhood as a result of our participation in both the Shamrock Run and the Old First Ward Parade. McCarthy's has committed to us as an organization for the foreseeable future.
With that in mind, please don't hesitate to frequent our new benefactor. It is a perfect place to get together before a night on the town as its location is only five minutes from the downtown area. The prices can't be beat and they also offer food. Friday's also feature live music. This is a place that we can not only call home but that is also a living legacy of the neighborhoods that we represent.
The second announcement is that we have also entered into an agreement with the fine folks over at Steinlager to be our main sponsor. This will entail beer but also a number of great extras that I am sure we will appreciate. We will have signage and apparel with the Steinlager logo and this will also be incorporate into our jerseys. Some of the details include - a pop up tent for our usage, try-zone banners, coolers, balls, a framed All Blacks jersey for display at the bar, use of their logo on apparel, use of their logo on jerseys and of course - their beer. If anyone is wondering and did not have a chance to try it at the St. Patrick's Day Parade, this is a fantastic, smooth drinking beer.
In short, this is an exciting time to be part of this club's future. The best part of all of this is that we will be able to concentrate on the fun part of this club - the rugby. We are in a great position to make a challenge and run at the perennial front-runners. If we can make a strong push for the end of this spring and through the summer, this fall will truly be one to remember. I would like to take this opportunity to thank McCarthy's and Steinlager for their support. I would also like to thank everyone involved for not only their support, but also their patience as we moved through the process to nail these commitments down. A special thanks should also be given to the Executive Committee, who all put in a lot of work to make this happen and exhibited an inordinate amount of patience to make sure this all got off the ground.
(And as Andres so eloquently put it, Thank you to all of you for allowing me to be part of this team.)
Here is a good article on McCarthy's (either click or copy and paste into your browser)
